The Power of Emotional Intelligence and Resilience

This might be where I lose some of you (though many scientists find this idea intriguing). But combining your scientific expertise with emotional intelligence is key to navigating the ups and downs of building a company.

Emotional intelligence (EI) is a concept that gained prominence thanks to Daniel Goleman, a psychologist and author who highlighted its significance in his 1995 book Emotional Intelligence: Why It Can Matter More Than IQ. Goleman’s work outlines EI as the ability to understand and manage your own emotions while also being attuned to the emotions of others. He breaks it down into five key components: self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.

Why does this matter for leadership? Goleman’s research, along with subsequent studies, shows that EI is a crucial factor for effective leadership. Leaders who are emotionally intelligent tend to be better at managing stress, communicating with empathy, and fostering a positive team environment. Studies have found that leaders with high EI can improve team morale and productivity, reduce turnover, and create more resilient workplaces. It’s not just about being nice; it’s about understanding what drives people, how to motivate them, and how to navigate challenges with a level head. As a founder, you will need to inspire teams, win over investors, and lead through uncertainty. EI is what helps you bring people along on the journey, turning scientific visions into commercial realities.

And this is where resilience comes into play. The path to building a biotech company is rarely straightforward. Research delays, regulatory hurdles, and funding challenges are just a few of the bumps on the road. It’s those who stay resilient, who bounce back with a new perspective or a renewed determination, who have the edge. And the good news? Resilience can be built over time through a growth mindset and mindfulness practices. This is way we have incorporated some activities from one of the market leading mindfulness app- Headspace. And yes, I also look for evidence of effectiveness, and there’s substantial research showing that practicing mindfulness meditation for just 8 weeks can lead to positive changes in the brain.
